Learn more about beach sunscreens with Korea Skin Mall!
A summer must-have item! Yes, it’s the sun care product. Because sun screens are directly applied on to the skin, there are a bunch of things to consider: method of application, safety of use, and level of sun protection.
But in Hawaii, there are other considerations in Hawaii! We don’t want to use sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals because we have to protect marine life. Suncare products that we use for skin care contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are both chemicals that may severely damage the marine ecosystems, and therefore banned by the Hawaiian government for the protection of coral reefs and marine life. Since 2021, unless prescribed for special medical reasons, we cannot use sun care products that contain these two ingredients.
Oxybenzone? Octinoxate? What are these anyway?
Oxybenzone and octinoxate are ingredients of chemical-absorbing sunscreens. Washed off from beach-goers and household wastewater, these ingredients flow into the sea. The environmental hormones produced by these two ingredients cause genetic damage to coral reefs, mortality in developing coral, increase coral bleaching.
Oxybenzone is harmful to both human body and marine ecosystem, and although still a matter of debate, less than a certain amount of octinoxate has no effect on human body. This applies not only in Hawaii, so it’s best that we choose sun care products that do not contain these two ingredients.
