Oxybenzone? Octinoxate? What are these anyway?
Oxybenzone and octinoxate are ingredients of chemical-absorbing sunscreens. Washed off from beach-goers and household wastewater, these ingredients flow into the sea. The environmental hormones produced by these two ingredients cause genetic damage to coral reefs, mortality in developing coral, increase coral bleaching.

Oxybenzone is harmful to both human body and marine ecosystem, and although still a matter of debate, less than a certain amount of octinoxate has no effect on human body. This applies not only in Hawaii, so it’s best that we choose sun care products that do not contain these two ingredients.
